When I started planning my little girl’s mermaid party, I knew that I wanted an epic centerpiece, and the theme totally lent to that. If you’ve been following along with my projects or my YouTube channel, you know that my world, at least creatively speaking, has been revolving around mermaids. And two of my pouring projects culminated in this amazing centerpiece that I’m just in love with.
Treasure Chest
The main body of the centerpiece is this treasure chest that I poured on and finished with Dutch oil.
Fabric Lining
I found this amazing mermaid fabric at Hobby Lobby, and I just couldn’t leave without it with a mermaid party waiting in the wings. Plus, it will be great for Halloween costumes.
I wanted to line the treasure chest with the fabric and make it look luxurious, you know, like I feel a treasure chest should be. So I cut a piece of fabric that was a couple inches larger in area than the sum of the bottom of the box and the sides of the box. Then I hot glued the fabric to the edges of the box. To make it look clean, I folded the edge of the fabric inward toward the box before gluing.
To make the folds of the lining, I adjusted the fabric until I liked it and then glued along the edge. I ended up strategically gluing some parts of the center as well in order to maintain the folds that I liked. Rinse and repeat for the top of the box.
Keeping the Treasure Chest Open
The next task in doing up this centerpiece was figuring out how to keep the treasure chest open. I loved the way the acrylic pour on the top of the treasure chest turned out, and I wanted it to be visible in the final product. I figured out how wide I wanted the treasure chest to be open and cut some lace to fit. Then I hot glued it to the top and bottom of the front of the box on each side.
Treasure!
Then I freehanded a number one on white card stock, cut it out, and drew some pink bubbles on it. I placed this in the top of the box in a place of prominence to celebrate the big birthday!
Inside the treasure chest, I placed some of the seashells that I acrylic poured on as well as some natural seashells.
And that’s how I put together the centerpiece for my princess’s first birthday party, a memento that will be treasured in our house for sure. As a matter of fact, it’s already part of her bedroom decor now and will go into my stash of childhood keepsakes for sure.
Go Forth and Make Waves!
If you too have a mermaid in your life, this is the perfect finishing touch for her special day! You can totally customize it to fit your little one, with different color schemes, different fabric, different treasure chest contents. The sky’s the limit!
